Why is Signage important?

Signs are everywhere and therefore taken for granted. Your walking into to your local town and all you see is shop after shop displaying all different types of signage, but why?

A well designed sign has many goals of what it can actually achieve for your business:

  • Nearly every business has a sign displaying their company name on it so I can bet your competitors do too - take time in the design and work along side your sign maker so that you ensure that your sign is the one that will stand out over your competitors to drive customers to you.
  • Not only can signage spot the eye of a new customer, it acts as your business's first impression to them. Within a design you can bring out the professional look that your business may be aiming for.
  • By having a simple, straight to the point sign with image and text it will leave customers remembering your business over your competitors, this can lead to potential returning customers. Consistence should be shown throughout your marketing mix acting as reminders to your customers.

Since 1997, the sign company 'Signtronix' has had a annual survey which they sponsored. It asks many questions from random customers who have visited businesses for which 'Signtronix' made a sign. One of the questions say, "How did you learn about this business?" The survey states that nearly half of these customers learned about a business because of its sign.

What is a window graphic?

Basically a window graphic is just a printed pattern/text/image that is designed to stick securely on windows, there are a few types of different media that are used, each one of them are different in their ways.

Shop window graphics may be placed to avoid collisions, especially in heavily congested places as part of health and safety regulations. However, that's not the only reason, they can also make the shop more inviting to potential customers by looking decorative. It's also popular on cars, but for a different purpose such as privacy - a lot of cars have a black tinted film on their windows to stop people from looking into the car but the driver will still be able to look out of the window.

Like I have said before there a few types of different media that you can apply on your window that are suitable, one of those are:

  • Etched Vinyl - this vinyl is often received from the manufacturer in a greyish colour, the etch is also transparent so it does allow some light through, it is often used to decorate the shop window. Heath and safety regulations are now saying that any large areas of glass must be marked to prevent accidental collision – an important consideration for your staff and visitors.
  • One-way vision film - mostly used for car windows but are available for shop windows and doors. The film allows you to see through one side but it will restrict vision the other side.
  • Promotional Graphics - full colour stickers that are printed out on window media and stuck straight to your window. If its your competitors that your weary about, these promotional graphics are ideal for standing out and ensuring that potential customers will use you rather than your competitors because you stand out more.

Applying a graphic

Still to this day people are unfamilar with graphic vinyl and therefore don't know how to apply it to either their car or wall/window... If you buy from Wright Signs Ltd you can be sure that you will recieve your purchased vinyl cut out whether its lettering or picture will be packaged with the application tape going over the top.

 Tools you may need:

A Sqeegee (Credit Card is fine)

Masking Tape

A Sharp Knife

Suitable Cleaning Fluid and Rag

Tape Measure

Follow these useful tips...

1. First of all you need to make sure that where you want your vinyl graphic to go is clean, so grease grit and any dust need to go! Apply a methylated spirit solution to your desired area and use the rag to wipe the dirt off.

2. In this step you could either use your trusty eye to position the graphic, or if you have a tape measure to hand and a crayon (that cleans off after) you can get the vinyl in the exact position you are after. If the graphic is quite a big one like the one in the example photo, you may need to use masking tape to hold it in place (it just makes the job a lot easier).

3. Now to push any air bubbles that you may have made, get your sqeegee and following the vinyl pattern/lettering apply pressure to it - this ensures that the vinyl is stuck securely.

4. It is time to remove the application tape off the graphic, so just the vinyl is remaining. to do this start at a corner and pull at a 180 degree angle against the graphic (like shown in the picutre) you have to be careful that you don't pull too forcefull as you will rip the graphic off your car/wall.Once you have removed the application paper, it is imperative to go back and resqueegee the graphic.

5. Once the vinyl is firmly stuck on the surface you may go over the graphic and prick using a sharp knife or something similar any other air bubbles, and then just use your thumb to squeeze the air out. Finally use the methyalted spirits over the graphic to clean any crayon mark etc, use a rag to wipe over and allow to dry out.
